Brooks Wakerman burst onto the scene in 2001, joining the band with an infectious energy and excitement. Bobby had unfortunately been forced to retire from drumming due to a chronic shoulder injury, leaving the band in need of a new drummer. As luck would have it, the band had already booked some rehearsal studio time in LA, so they decided to turn it into an audition session. And that’s when Brooks stepped in.
Brooks, who had previously played with Suicidal Tendencies and the Vandals, was the fifth person to try out for Bobby’s position. His family’s reputation in the percussion world preceded him, with his brother Chad having played with Frank Zappa’s band. When Brooks started playing, it was clear to everyone that he was something special. Greg couldn’t contain his excitement and innocently asked Brooks if he wanted to be a permanent member of Bad Religion. And without hesitation, Brooks shouted a resounding YES!
For all the drummers out there, Brooks shared some technical details about his set with Bad Religion. He mentioned that he probably wouldn’t be using the ocpd with vents in the shell, as he found the sound too thin. Instead, he planned to use a solid shell or a d.w. snare for a fatter sound. The rest of his set would remain the same, with a four-piece and possibly an additional 16-inch floor tom. Unfortunately, he had to leave half of his double pedal at home, unless they decided to break out Slayer’s “Reign in Blood.”
Before joining Bad Religion, Brooks had an impressive resume, playing with various bands such as Bad 4 Good, Infectious Grooves, The Vandals, Suicidal Tendencies, and more. But now, he was ready to embark on a new chapter with Bad Religion, touring, recording, and becoming an integral part of the band.
So, get ready to witness the incredible talent and energy that Brooks brings to Bad Religion. It’s going to be an exhilarating ride!
